Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Requirements for your image data:

Data:

WhiteWall uses digital data only. That means that your works should be created with a digital camera or that analog works have been scanned.

Note: If you would like to offer your work on the WhiteWall Art Market, please do not include a title or signature in a black or white border. These devalue the item in the eyes of purchasers. Works that infringe on personal or intellectual property rights or contain pornographic content will be rejected.

Data format:

Your data files must be in either JPG or TIF format.

Data size:

The shortest side of a work must be at least 1330 pixels long. Possible print sizes are based on the number of pixels. The larger you would like to have your work produced, the higher the number of pixels must be.

After you have uploaded your data, our system will show you the largest size at which your work can be produced.

Hint: Be sure to finalize any cropping and relative dimensions BEFORE you upload your data. You cannot define the format in the WhiteWall photo lab. Our system does, however, allow you to finalize the size (dependent on the number of pixels) of your motif to the exact centimeter. Your picture will retain its original relative size (width to height ratio).

Each data file may be up to 250 MB.

Color mode:

The data may be uploaded in RGB or CMYK. CMYK files will be converted into RGB in the production process. If a color profile is not attached to the file, we will assume that your file has an sRGB profile.

ICC profiles:

ICC is a standard for transferring colour spaces. The aim of this colour management is to ensure an authentic reproduction of prints (for example scanned pictures or original digital files) across different printing devices .

For each technique that WhiteWall uses to produce prints there is an ICC profile available to download.

Questions about our products:

Why can the WhiteWall photo lab produce a fairly large print from a relatively small data file?

When calculating the maximum format (on the basis of your file’s pixels) we also take into account the likely distance from which one will view the picture. The larger the image, the farther a viewer will stand from the object. This distance allows us to the drop the resolution; the human eye makes up for this over the increased distance from the picture.

If I buy a photograph already mounted, can I later remove it from the aluminum? Can I remove the protective film or acrylic glass?

A mounted photograph cannot be removed from its backing support. The UV-protective film and acrylic glass also cannot be removed from the photo. On the other hand, a mounted picture can always later be framed. The frame builder simply integrates the photo-plate with UV-protective film or acrylic glass into a frame.

How do I clean my work?

You can dust your work with a lent-free, soft, dry towel. Please under no circumstances use glass cleaner on your mounted work on backing support or on your acrylic glass mounting! Avoid putting pressure on surface when rubbing.

Orders and delivery:

Ordering - how do I buy an item on the Art Market?

You can either search for images according to specific criteria, or view the current charts. Each artist has provided a suggestion for the optimum presentation or his or her work. You can adjust this according to the print techniques available.

Order the work you want on online - we deliver it to your door. It doesn't get any easier!

How do I pay?

You may pay with a debit note (available only for German accounts) or with a credit card. You will be charged when the order is shipped since we produce your works immediately after the order has been placed.

Delivery Time

Your prints will usually be shipped within 6 working days. Laminations and framings usually require 10 to 15 working days. Each work is processed individually.

What are the shipping costs?

See shipping costs overview

How are works sent?

Individually discussed exceptions aside, your order will be delivered from the storehouse to the shipping address you provided. Information regarding the delivery timeframe is nonbinding unless, in an exception, a delivery deadline has clearly been agreed upon. We are unfortunately not able to give exact dates of delivery since works do not await sale in the storehouse but rather are produced only after having been ordered. If the delivery service is not able to deliver your package, it will leave a note so that you may be in touch directly with the delivery service and confirm a time and date.

Do you deliver abroad? And if so, should I except further costs?

WhiteWall ships worldwide. You must plan (in non-EU countries) to pay customs fees and/or import sales taxes. These vary from country to country.

Can I change my delivery address before the work is shipped?

If you would like to change your delivery address, please contact the WhiteWall hotline at +49 (0)30 303069-30 or send an e-mail to info@whitewall.com. If your order has not yet been sent, we will be happy to emend the address.

What do I do if the work arrives damaged?

If you ascertain damages when receiving or opening the packing, please call the WhiteWall hotline at +49 (0)30 303069-30 or send us an email to info@whitewall.com immediately. Only in this fashion can we process the return.

Does WhiteWall offer customer service?

Please ask for individual offers if you plan to order a larger amount. For resellers, we offer the following discounts: 3% if the order volume is 2000 € or higher, 5% if the order volume is 3000 € or higher and 7% if the order is 4000 € or higher. If you have reached one of these thresholds, please contact us. This discount will then be valid for all future transactions. You can reach us by phone: +49-30-30306930 (Mon-Fr 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.) or by mail: info@whitewall.com.

Return policy / Cancellation of Sale

Photolab:
Please note that the cancellation of a sale/contract is precluded (Paragraph 312 d Abs. 4 Nr. 1 BGB, Widerrufs- und Rückgaberecht bei Fernabsatzverträgen) since the work was produced according to your specifications and tailored exactly to your individual needs (Paragraph 312 d Abs. 4 Nr. 1 BGB).

Art market/Your own gallery:
To quote from our General Terms and Conditions: You may revoke your intention to contract within 2 weeks without indication of reason, The revocation shall be made in text form (e.g. letter, fax, e-mail) or by return of the goods delivered. With respect to the determination of whether the 2 week revocation period is observed, the date of posting/sending of notice of revocation, alternatively, the date of return of the goods, shall be decisive. This right is restricted to 2 individual works per buyer per calendar quarter. Photographs with a freely selectable size (“variable size”), special print requests, framing, frame colour or mounting are, however, customised works for which a right of revocation shall be excluded. On account of their unprotected surfaces, unframed or unmounted copies and prints lose their first-hand status on opening and are thus not suitable for return.

Selling works

How can I sell my works?

You can sell your works through the WhiteWall Art Market or on your own Gallery Page. For works that are sold you receive a royalty. WhiteWall takes care of the production, packaging, delivery, payment collection, and customer services. We will also market the WhiteWall Art Market through a range of advertising and PR initiatives.

How much can I earn through WhiteWall?

We have summarized the principles governing our work together in our General Terms and Conditions. The following information provides rough details on how much you can earn with your works through WhiteWall.

With respect to all sales through the central Art Market on WhiteWall.com and on your own Gallery Pages, WhiteWall will assume finance, production, refinement, packaging, delivery, payment collection, customer service and the handling of returns.

You have the following options with regards to sales on WhiteWall:
a) Agree to the price suggested by WhiteWall. Your work can then be sold on the Art Market and on your own Gallery Page. You will receive royalties of 15%.
b) You determine how much you would like to earn from the sale of each work, independent of the size of the work. If you determine the price yourself, your works can only be sold through your own Gallery.

The licenses/commissions refer to the net sales price of the prints.

The base price is the price used to calculate the sale cost of prints, according to the cost of production. This price is independent of the format of the print and the print technique selected.

Starting with the base price, a number of factors then determine the cost of the item on the Art Market or on your Gallery.
These factors are as follows:
- Type of edition (Limited or Open Edition)
For Limited Editions the number of copies has an impact on the cost
- Number of copies sold
- Jury evaluation (e.g. 3 stars)

How are license fees paid and how are tax issues dealt with?

The General Terms and Conditions provide a thorough account of the rules on payment. The most important information is given here in summary:

Licenses are calculated to the end of each calendar quarter. This way, unpaid debits, (part) cancellations and returns can be taken into account. With respect to sums over 100 Euros, we reserve the right to issue statement of account monthly. Payment follows within 30 days of issue of statement.

Responsibility for taxation of the license fees received rests with the recipient.

If you are VAT registered and have indicated this in the menu point "My Details/Royalty Address" along with VAT registration number, we will pay the license/commission fees with statutory VAT (currently 19%).

Your works on the Art Market

Why should I put my works on the WhiteWall Art Market?

The WhiteWall Art Market displays the work of different artists that has been approved by the Jury. Through numerous advertising and PR initiatives the WhiteWall Team will ensure that many art enthusiasts from across the world can visit the Art Market and purchase works.

How many images can I upload onto WhiteWall Art Market?

You can offer up to 15 works on the WhiteWall Art Market.

How do I put my works on the Art Market?

To put your works on the Art Market you need to go "My Images/Work Details" and add details to images you have already uploaded, such as title, category, colour, and emotion.

Here you can enter keywords for the Art Market search. Please enter these words in English and in the singular form - umlauts can be read by the system. You can separate words by using a comma, full stop, dash, or semi-colon. Use words that are not covered under the category description and that describe the emotional or symbolic content of the image. It might also be useful to describe unique content of the picture.

The image itself is the foundation of your artwork, but the means in which it is presented is also important. Once you have entered the Work Details, you can determine the product, format, size and product detail under "Create item". Your specifications are a suggestion to the vbuyer, that he or she can vary to an extent. To allow the largest choice of variations please select the Lambda print technique.

Once you have entered the Work Details and created an item, request a free soft-proof under "My Images/Soft-proofing". The soft-proof PDF lets you select a particular variation of your image and approve it.

Once you have entered the Work Details, created an item, and approved a variation of the soft-proof you can submit your work to the Jury under "My Images/Sell works". The Jury will evaluate whether your work is good enough for the Art Market, but you are also free to sell your image on your own Gallery Page under "My Galleries/Assign images".

How does the free soft-proofing work?

All prints that are sold will be based on your original file. For each printing technique, however, the file will be processed differently.

To allow you to see online what a print from your picture file will look like we have created a simulation. Four different variations will be produced from your original file, which will differ in colour tones and contrast. These are made available under "My Images/Soft-proofing" as a PDF, which you can open with the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.

This PDF lets you select one of the variations. If the colours on your monitor are set correctly, the PDF gives a very clear indication of the colour of the print.

Limited or Open Edition - which is better?

Both variants have their advantages: A limited edition is more exclusive and you therefore receive a higher license fee per work sold. An open edition can be sold however many times it is ordered. The lower license fee paid per copy may thus be made good by frequent sales.

We recommend limited editions with a circulation of 100 editions. This, on the one hand, corresponds to the interest of WhiteWall's clients in exclusive works and on the other hand, offers you as an artist optimal license returns.

Can I sell the work of other artists?

You can create artists and assign works to them under "My Artists". You will automatically be added as the first artist, but you can sell your work under another artist name/pseudonym simply by assigning your own work to that artist name.

Can I add a signature to my works?

You can add a signature to Limited Editions. Under the menu item "My Artists" you can add a signature to each one of your entered artists by uploading a file. This will then automatically be included in the Certificate of Authenticity. The signature is optional and does not affect the sale price.

How does the WhiteWall Jury work?

All works that are available on WhiteWall.com are selected by the Jury.

Each work that an artist submits to the Jury will be evaluated by three jurors. They will assess the quality of the work by using (half) stars - 5 stars is the maximum. The individual ratings will be combined to produce an average. If this is over 2,5 stars then the work can be sold on the WhiteWall Art Market.

The Jury assessment takes place online. Jury members have special access to pages where the works put forward for assessment are collected and given their rating.

How do I get appointed to the Jury? What are the advantages?

Of all WhiteWall artists, the Jury is selected automatically on the basis of three factors: Assessment of their work by the Jury, assessment through WhiteWall Art Market visitors and the sales success of their works. The top 10 percent of artists, as determined through this procedure, automatically become Jury members.

Alongside the opportunity to actively influence the portfolio of the WhiteWall Art Market, Jury members receive another small bonus: Their works are sold at a slightly increased price - this way license fees per piece sold also increase.

Do I have to commit my works exclusively to WhiteWall?

Our General Terms and Conditions regulate all points of our work together and all details with regard to the granting of rights. This means: Of course, you hold the copyrights to your works. However, alongside the right to sell your work, you also grant us certain rights of use, for instance for advertising purposes.

Limited editions may only be sold through WhiteWall for the entire duration of our work together. If you have already produced an edition independently of WhiteWall, we shall be entitled to request written details of such. If you offer a limited edition of your work through WhiteWall, even after termination of contract, you may only offer the unsold limited editions for sale. A limited edition of defined size and number may only be sold within these limits. This shall apply both with respect to sale through the WhiteWall Art Market as well as to sale through your Gallery Page.

Hint: You may not offer works for sale both on your own Gallery Page and through the WhiteWall Art Market – the system oversees ALL sales and therefore ensures adherence to the set limits for limited editions.

Your works on your Gallery Page

What are the advantages of having my own Gallery?

Your own Gallery Page lets you reach the audience you want to. You can show an exclusive collection of your work professionally, and for free, under your own web address according to the formula www.WhiteWall.com/yourname.

For all orders placed online WhiteWall will take care of the production, packaging, delivery, payment collection and customer services - you can see an overview of your sales under the menu item "My Sales".

How can I create my own Gallery Page?

Once you have entered the Work Details, created an item, and approved a soft-proof, you can sell your work on your own Gallery Page.

You can open your own gallery under "My Galleries/Assign images". To do this you need to decide on the desired URL, choose a gallery name, and you can then upload a gallery logo and choose from the standard layouts.

Can I adjust the layout of my Gallery Page?

You can choose between four standard layouts. Under "My Galleries" you can edit galleries that you have already created and, using the editor in the professional mode, edit the CSS styles as you wish. This lets you create just the appearance you want for your gallery.
